May 25, 2020Is there are model or type of (ir)responsible citizenship in American history
May 25, 2020WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT # TWO 1. GENDER: what are some of the demographic traits of Latinas? How are they doing in the labor market? What kinds of jobs do they have? Can we apply concepts like marianismo to them? For a good summary on Puerto Rican women see Toro-Morn & Garcia, Gendered Fault Lines (in our class website under course documents). A great book on Central American women is Fragmented ties: Salvadoran Immigrant Networks in America, by Cecilia Menjivar. Also, the book written by Gina Perez is a great account on how Puerto Rican women adjusted to life in Chicago (The Near Northwest Side Story, Migration, Displacement and Puerto Rican Families). 2. How important is fluency in English in the school experience of Latino children? What are the best programs or strategies to help those who are Limited English Proficient (LEP’s) ? For example, should programs be developed to maintain the child’s native language while learning English (additive approach) or should they emphasize that students be transitioned as soon as possible to the monolingual program (subtractive approach). Explain the differences between developmental and transitional bilingual education. Using a combination of primary sources and websites (some are listed below), demonstrate your understanding of both the argument for and against bilingual education. What does the research say about the effectiveness of bilingual education? Is the “English Only” movement an example of linguicism? Use a minimum of three sources to support each side of the argument (a total of six sources). If you need locating more sources please contact the multicultural studies librarian at 229-6613. Also, the publication “Education Week” has some good articles on language learners. For example, read the article “Momentum builds for Dual Language Learning” (March 23, 2012). http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2012/03/23/26duallanguage_ep.h31.html Websites for Assignment 2: http://www.languagepolicy.net/ www.nabe.org/ www.nclr.org/ ARTICLE available on website: “Immersion, not Submersion” (reviews evidence on effectiveness of Proposition 227 in California). Also “Lecture notes on Bilingual Education” and “Confronting the Crisis in Literacy” These two books can be purchased and contain great material: Crawford, J. English Learners in American Classrooms: 101 Questions, 101 Answers Crawford, J. At War With Diversity: US Language Policy in an Age of Anxiety If you are interested in other topics in education, for example national trends in youth literacy, read the article “Confronting the Crisis in Literacy” (under “Course Documents”). Note: The second paper should be of a theoretical nature, that is, based on examining an issue (e.g., Latino poverty, school achievement, gender relations, employment) in light of the existing research literature. The second paper should be of 10-15 pages in length (not including references) and is due on Friday, December 15. Students are allowed and encouraged to collaborate in producing written assignments (but additional length or number of pages will be expected)
