Background The concept of community is frequently referred in contemporary public and social practice but there are a number of competing definitions of it. In its traditional sense the idea of a community refers to a sense of belonging or identification in a place or neighbourhood. However there are much broader understandings of such concepts – shared interests, social networks, relationships, global, technology and so on. On a national and local level the concept of community initiatives has been frequently promoted as a method to improve social cohesion and overall health and wellbeing, although this is not without criticism, referring to the dark side of the community.
