May 31, 2020Paper 3: Research Paper Using Effect Analysis Assignment: Analyze the positive and/or negative effects of texting (the results of texting). You must use and cite two out of the three sources I have posted on Blackboard (Assignments>Essay 3>Sources 1, 2, or 3). Furthermore, you must use and cite an additional source of your finding from the library databases. You must use three sources total. As you can see from the sources I have posted online, the effects of texting vary. You might, for instance, find a source that explores how texting negatively effects driving or bullying and/or cyber bullying. In addition, you may find a source that explores how texting positively influences writing skills or language and learning. Your additional source can explore the same topic(s) as the sources posted on Blackboard. Your essay will need to explore 3 different positive and/or negative effects of texting total. You might, for instance, have one body paragraph on how texting effects writing skills, another on how texting effects driving, and so on. Your thesis should be set up using the three- pronged approach. In other words, it should specifically introduce the three points explored in the body paragraphs. We will discuss how to set up the essay’s thesis more in class. You must appropriately integrate four quotations into this essay. If you drop a quote in, it does not count as one of your four required quotations. Length: 5-7 typed pages Audience: Those who have an interest but no specialized knowledge about your topic. You will need to define terms and provide a bit of background if and when necessary. Format: MLA, with MLA documentation, including a signal phrase, parenthetical documentation, and a works-cited page Sources: Three total- two of the three sources I have posted to Blackboard (Assignments>Essay 3>Sources, 1, 2 and 3) and one additional source of your choosing. Your additional source may be: • One scholarly or professional journal article Be sure that you use a full-text article. You can’t cite an abstract. • One book by an authority on the subject Do not cite a general encyclopedia like World Book. Do not use a book review as a source. Library databases have journal articles. ProQuest Central may be a good place to begin. See me or a librarian if you are unsure if your source is suitable for this assignment. You must hand in photocopies or printouts of the pages of the additional source you cite (quote, paraphrase, or summarize). For books, copy the title page and copyright page as well as the pages you cite from. Submission: In a binder clip: 1. rubric 2. draft to be graded 3. rough drafts (even for the first submission) 4. hard copies of the pages of the sources used and an electronic copy submitted to SafeAssign on Blackboard. As always, I will not read essays that are not submitted to SafeAssign on Blackboard. Helpful Hints from Students Who Have Gone before You Time and tide wait for no man (or woman). • Do not wait until the last minute to get started. You really can’t write this paper the night before it’s due. You can’t even get it done in just a week. When she says get started right away, she’s not kidding. • Make a schedule. • Don’t try to recycle a paper from another class. It won’t work. • Research in the time you actually have available. • Ask for help early if you need it. And use the Writing Center. It really helps. • Make sure you get down all the information on your sources that you need to write the works cited entry. The book might be out of the library if you try to go back to find what you need. • If you even think you might use a source, make a copy of it. Get more sources than what’s required and pick the best ones. • If you’re taking notes, be sure you write down what source you’re using and what page. You need it for later when you document. CAUTION: What is the most frequent reason for failing ENG 111? Students get behind on the research paper and can’t catch up and produce a solid essay. Information on Organizing Your Paper 1. Focus on and write a thorough analysis on three effects of texting. 2. Categorize your effects. Writing your thesis first to decide on which effects you plan to explore may work well. In the body of your essay, you must explore the three points you outline in your thesis in the same order you present them in upfront. 3. Prove effect. Provide evidence to back up your assertion that something is an effect. Statistics, interviews, and expert opinions would all help in proving your points in this essay. 4. Follow standard essay structure: introduction, body, and conclusion 5. Try writing a working thesis to help you organize the paper. You can’t write one until you do some preliminary research. P.S ONLY USE THE ARTICLE I PUT BELOW AND THE QUOTATION. I ALSO NEED A CITE PAGE IN MLA STYLES thanks
