June 7, 2020Film response: A film response will demonstrate your analytic response to the examined films. Your task is to examine a single film technique or device as it is used in a film we analyse in a given week, e.g.: editing, cinematography, lighting, mode of narration, etc. You need to focus on specific aspect(s) of selected cinematic technique/device (e.g. for mise-en-scène it could be costume, prop, internal frame, etc. for cinematography it could be camera lenses, angles, distances, etc. for sound it could be sound hierarchies, sound motifs, etc.) and make some comments on its significance and/or meaning. Compose your response as a mini-essay, i.e. in an intro part you need to formulate thesis (e.g. costume as codifying social position of a character), then discuss it in body paragraphs, and end up with a brief conclusion. Do not retell the story (we will have all seen the film) and try to avoid over simplified opinions such as, ‘I didn’t like it, since it was boring,’ ‘it was bad,’ ‘it was awesome.’ You are more than welcome to express your opinion, however, you need to present evidence supporting it. Format: 2 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font Times New Roman, 1-inch margin. Also, do not analyze the characters in the movie.
