However, many leaders are ill prepared to adequately address the challenges that might arise from these situations, which, in turn, can be damaging to their careers. In such instances, coaches often are called in not only to help leaders shepherd organizations through growth and change but also to address all related challenges. In the resources this week, you may have discovered that there are a variety of coaching strategies useful in such instances, many of which aim to broaden leaders’ thinking and bring about creative solutions to complex problems. In this week’s Application Assignment, you will examine the leadership challenges related to organizational growth and change as well as coaching strategies used to help leaders address these challenges. To prepare for this assignment: • Review the online chapter, “A Case Study of Executive Coaching as a Support Mechanism during Organizational Growth and Evolution.” In the article’s case study, pay particular attention to the leadership challenges faced by Gloria and Anne because of their organization’s rapid growth. Consider the strategies that Eric, the coaching consultant, used to help Gloria and Anne address these challenges. • Review the Course Media segment, “Organizational Growth and Change,” with Dr. Gordon Curphy. Reflect on the challenges leaders might encounter because of corporate mergers and acquisitions. Consider coaching strategies to help leaders address these challenges. • Review the online chapter, “Coaching Leaders through Culture Change.” Think about leadership challenges related to organizational culture change or any other major organizational change. Consider coaching strategies to help leaders address such challenges. • Review the online chapter, “Ideas on Fostering Creative Problem Solving in Executive Coaching.” Consider how you might use the coaching strategies of asking questions, using metaphors, and brainstorming to help leaders address challenges related to organizational growth and change. • Identify three leadership challenges that might occur because of organizational change and/or growth. • Consider the strategies that you might use to help leaders address the challenges you identified. Reflect on how and why these strategies might be effective. ***** Assignment – The Application Assignment – Write a 2 page paper that • Briefly describe at least three leadership challenges related to organizational growth and change. • Describe at least three strategies you would use to help leaders address the challenges you described. Explain how and why you think each strategy would be effective. Be specific. ***** Make sure you have at least three challenges, and three total strategies (at least one for each challenge), and details on how and why each strategy would work for the specific challenges. Organizational Growth and Change Organizations have been and will continue to be affected by the current state of affairs in the world. For instance, globalization, economic highs and lows, and even presidential elections influence how organizations operate and affect the degree to which they are successful. It is important for you as a future coach to be aware of how such events might influence the growth and change of organizations and, in turn, present unique challenges for leaders. In the Application Assignment this week, you explored some of the leadership challenges related to organizational growth and change as well as coaching strategies that would help leaders address each. Now, you will apply what you have learned about identifying and addressing leadership challenges related to organizational growth and change to a specific, recent example of an organization covered in the news and affected by current events. To prepare for this Discussion: • Review the online chapters, “A Case Study of Executive Coaching as a Support Mechanism During Organizational Growth and Evolution” and “Coaching Leaders through Culture Change,” as well as Dr. Curphy’s segment in the Course Media. Consider specific examples of organizational growth and change, leadership challenges that might arise from these situations, and coaching strategies that would help leaders address these challenges. • Review the online chapter, “Ideas on Fostering Creative Problem Solving in Executive Coaching.” Consider how you might use the coaching strategies discussed in the chapter to help leaders address challenges related to organizational growth and change. • Find a recent example in the media (within the last year) of an organization going through growth and/or change as a result of current events. • Reflect on the possible challenges that the leaders in your example might have encountered. Identify one challenge that you believe would be the most difficult for the organization’s leaders to overcome. • With this in mind, identify at least one coaching strategy you would use to help leaders address the selected challenge and think about why it would be effective.
