June 9, 2020Discuss different kinds of “crossings” that take place in “Tenma.” We can think of geographical borders (from city to country, from one location to another within the empire), cultural borders (Japanization, Koreanization, Westernization), ethnic boundaries (Koreans passing as Japanese or Japanese and Koreans wanting to be Western/white). Consider the following related issues: What kinds of boundaries exist and are crossed by Genryu, the main character, and others in the story?; Who crosses these boundaries?; For what reasons are various boundaries and borders crossed by characters?; Do characters improve their situation and/or end up further being taken advantage of or experience loss of some kind when they cross these borders?; When they cross these boundaries, how do their “identities,” i.e., their own sense of belonging and being who they are, get transformed?; If they cross one kind of border (for example, geographical border), does that lead to crossing other kinds of borders? Some of these “crossings” I mention above are more obvious examples. You can be creative and come up with many other kinds of crossings that you observe in the story. Cite at least 2-3 examples per paragraph. Your paper should consist of your close and detailed analysis of these textual examples, not just textual examples or your paraphrasing or summary of them. These questions I list above for each topic are meant as guides to how you might think about these topics. Your paper should not consist of “answers” or “responses” to these questions. They are offered to you to help you explore the topics.
