June 10, 2020Culture Jamming Assignment Prerequisites include reading and discussing the following texts. Harold, C. (2004). Pranking Rhetoric: “Culture Jamming” as Media Activism. Critical Studies in Media Communication, 21 (3), 189-211. Sensoy, O. & DiAngelo, R. (2012). Oppression and Power. Is Everyone Really Equal? 38-43. New York: Teachers College Press. Step 1: Choose your artifact Select a public artifact that you resist. It can be a billboard, sign, public notice, plaque, sculpture, or advertisement. It cannot be something private, such as a personal email. Step 2: Analysis What is the intended purpose of the piece? For example, the intended purpose of the Statue of Liberty is to be a symbol of freedom and hospitality to all refugees. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Identify its rhetorical strategies. How is it communicating what it intends to communicate? For example, you could argue that the Statue of Liberty uses the symbol of the torch to communicate welcome, as a lighthouse offers light during a storm, so to the torch offers the light of freedom to refugees. Write 50 to 100 words on the rhetorical strategies of your artifact. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Now that you have identified the elements of the piece that seek to persuade the audience toward an intended purpose, identify what you feel is hypocritical about the piece. Write 50 to 100 words about the inherent contradictions that you observe in your artifact. For example, although the Statue of Liberty seeks to welcome refugees, the fact that she is in the form of a Roman Goddess perpetuates racist colonialist ideology. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Step 3: Brainstorm your jam How will you disrupt the rhetoric of your artifact? Brainstorm how you might make the hypocrisy visible. How might you change your artifact so that the oppressive nature or inherent contradiction be made more visible to the audience. For example, you could change the poem at the bottom of the Statue of Liberty to indicate the legacy of racism the statue ignores or to point out the current crisis around Syrian refugees. Document your brainstorm here. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Step 4: Disruption and Jamming Now that you have a plan, go for it.
