5.1 Task Students are required to submit a 4,000 words literature review and essay on the following question: In today’s fast paced world leadership is prized as an essential attribute for organisational success. Organisations now expect their senior managers to be effective leaders and invest heavily in specialised leadership programs. Based on this view do you believe that managers can be trained to be leaders? Provide evidence form industry to support your answer. Assessment Breakdown: The assignment will be graded on following criteria: 1. Defining the difference between the concepts of leadership and management. (15%) 2. Comparing and contrasting two theories of leadership. Leadership theories include: Trait Theory, Behavioural Theories, Contingency Theory, Charismatic Leadership and Transformational Leadership. Students can choose any two theories. (30%) 3. Analysis of the effectiveness of leadership selection and training program from one organisation. Evaluate the possible implications of recent and future change in the field of people management and leadership. (30%) 4. Ability to contextualise the previous discussion to develop a coherent argument to address the assignment question: Can managers be trained as leaders? (15%) 5. Correct use of essay format, together with Harvard referencing of all sources of information. Assessment Guidance: (10%) To answer this questions students must firstly begin by defining the concepts of management and leadership and highlighting the differences between the two. Students are then required to compare and contrast TWO theories of leadership. Leadership theories include: Trait Theory, Behavioural Theories, Assessment Brief: Organisations: Leadership and Management 2016-17 Page 4 Contingency Theory, Charismatic Leadership and Transformational Leadership. Students must then analyse the effectiveness of an organisation’s leadership training programs. Students must illustrate and support their arguments with examples from industry. Please ensure you refer to recent academic research to support your argument. With 4000 words students are able to provide a fairly comprehensive overview of the relevant literature in this area. Please ensure that include relevant and recent literature. Students are advised to choose a larger organisation with a well-established leadership program for analysis. To ensure that you do not exceed the word limit any additional information regarding details of the leadership training program should be included in the appendices. Present your understanding with clear arguments in the body of the report and as suggested utilise appendices for further detail / data. Your arguments and explanations must be clearly supported by appropriately credible/academic references following Harvard referencing system throughout. Remember that you should write the report in your own words not either as direct copy of paraphrasing as this will be identified in turnitin. 5.2 Submission requirements You are required to submit this assignment by Wednesday 12 April 2017. You must submit your assignment by using the Turnitin gateway in the module’s Canvas site.
