Write an 8-10-page paper (excluding cover page and references) responding to the following: Choose a controversial topic in the field of juvenile justice and write a position paper on the topic. Decide your stance (either pro or con) on the topic and provide research from scholarly journals to support your position. In addition, acknowledge the other side of the argument and provide a recommendation or a compromise between the two opposing parties. Strive to answer the question, “How can this controversy best be handled to successfully meet the basic ideology of juvenile court?” Part A In Part A of your position paper, evaluate the themes, trends, and model standards in the juvenile justice system as they relate to your topic. In this section be sure to clearly identify and evaluate the key components of the issue and any notable trends related to this issue that are being practiced in various court systems (including those at the local, state, and federal levels). Also, identify and evaluate notable model standards of practice or judicial interpretation that are relevant. Part B In Part B of your position paper, evaluate policy, operations, procedures, and reform in the juvenile justice system. In this section build on the foundation you established in Part A by identifying and evaluating policies, operations, and procedure and reform measures that have been put into place to address the contemporary issue in juvenile justice. The evaluation should consider points such as effectiveness of the policies, operations and procedures, costs to the system, and constituent populations (juveniles, society, etc.), sustainability, and any other points you find relevant. In this section you should also provide recommendations for how to bridge the different sides of the debate and handle the controversy within the existing ideological framework of the court. Tips for Success In both sections be sure to address relevant counter arguments to your position as you make your case. Cite all sources according to APA style. Be sure the paper is formatted correctly according to APA style. Paper Format The paper is to be completed in APA format. Page length is 8–10 pages of text. The page count does not include the title page, references section, or the discussion concerning the credibility of references used section. No more than 10 percent of paper may be copied directly from outside sources. Refer to the Assignment Guide under Course Resources for additional formatting details. Note: This paper will require outside research. Use at least five credible outside sources, including academic journals, to support your position. Discuss how you evaluated the credibility of the resources used. You may consult the Library, the internet, the textbook, other course material, and any other outside resources in supporting your task, using proper citations in APA style. this is just to give you a little idea on what is possible. 1. Rehabilitation vs. Incarceration of juveniles 2. Effectiveness of juvenile courts and how they improve child behaviors 3. Juvenile offenders of major crimes-should the punishment fit the crime? 4. Racial disparities in juvenile sentencing 5. Juvenile justice and the use of restraints 6. Juveniles being held without just cause 7. Legal issues in the juvenile court system 8. Retribution and reform concerning the juvenile offender 9. Juvenile death penalty 10. Juveniles in adult court 11. Juvenile life with no parole 12. Is the juvenile justice wavering system necessary? 13. The juvenile court system 14. Juvenile sex offender registration Also, I will talk about this more in the next seminar, but the unit six assignment does not require an abstract. If you so choose to include an abstract, it does not count towards minimum page count of 8. Another tip is that this paper is going to consist of text only. Therefore, I do not want to see figures or tables. There are many reasons for this but two of the most important reasons are that if you end up using graphs and tables from a source, you have to get written permission from the author to use that information and you do not have time to receive that permission which can take weeks months years or never happen.
