June 18, 2020Research Context and Importance Many students initially confuse the importance of the problem with the importance of the study. While the importance of the problem highlights why the problem is of theoretical interest or social importance, the importance of the study is where you will make a strong statement about how your research will contribute to the body of knowledge in your discipline and its practical applications. This importance has several interrelated components. The first is identifying the research gap that your study will address. What empirical information is missing that contributes to the persistence of the problem? How will your study address this knowledge gap? You will also describe how your results may make an original contribution to the existing body of knowledge on the topic and problem. Think about the different ways your results may extend what is currently known and understood in your field. How might practitioners in your field use the results to address problems they may experience now and in the future? Consider all of the ways that the results may contribute to practice. A compelling statement of the importance of your study will demonstrate how the proposed research has the potential to advance knowledge and practice. feedback with peers, and use data and evidence from your readings to help you define problems in education that are of specific interest to you.
