June 19, 2020Why is it important to understand the relation between subjectivity and neoliberalism?
June 19, 2020Welcome to Discussion Board #5! Please Note: Make sure that you have read Chapter 5 and reviewed this week’s PowerPoint slides before completing this Discussion Board. For our last Discussion Board, you analyzed an ad on portion sizes from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH). Copy and paste the link below into your web browser and read a New York Times article that offers more information about that ad: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/25/nyregion/in-health-dept-ad-photoshop-not-diabetes-took-leg.html?_r=1& After you have read the article as well as Chapter 5 and the PowerPoint lecture notes, please answer the following questions: 1. What was your reaction after reading the New York Times article? 2. Comment on the ethical nature of the DOHMH’s decision to use an actor and manipulate the photo. In your answer, apply Thiroux’s principles of nonmaleficence and truth telling (see your textbook and PowerPoint lecture notes for principles). 3. Do you think health-related agencies like the DOHMH should be held to a different standard than those of corporations whose marketing tactics often include use of actors and Photoshop? BRIEFLY explain your answer. Please answer my questions below – and respond to TWO of your peers, as you’ve been doing – by the standard Discussion Board deadlines. 1. Commit a simple, random act of kindness this week. This is any benevolent act that leaves someone or something in better shape than before you committed the act. Tell us what you did and anything else about the act that you found interesting (such as how you felt doing it, how a recipient of the act may have responded, any other thoughts or observations you may have had). 2. Explore the different components of the website: https://www.randomactsofkindness.org/kindness-ideas 3. Share one thought and one question that this talk raised in your mind. 4. Using one of the Seven Responsibilities of Health Education Specialists, briefly describe how health educators can address kindness in their work.
