June 25, 2020Use PsycINFO to find the classic 1968 journal article by John Darley and Latané titled “Bystander Intervention in emergencies: Diffusion of responsibility”. Read the article and make notes. Prepare a summary of the article, not to exceed 600 words (include a word count with your summary–this word count does not include the reference, your name, student number or the word count itself). Remember you are summarizing the article so you will NOT be including ANY direct quotes — a summary involves providing something other than just a collection of direct quotes from the article. If your submission includes direct quotes you will be penalized. Start your assignment with an appropriate APA-formatted reference for the article. Also, early in your summary of the article be sure to include an in-text citation to the article (check to see how to appropriately cite research articles using APA format). After that however, you do not need to provide any further references or citations for the article (e.g., you do not have to end each paragraph of your summary with a citation to Darley & Latane, 1968). In your summary be sure to include headings for: “Introduction” discussing why the researchers conducted the study, and what theory, if any, they were seeking to support; “Method” (with sub-headings for “Participants” – describe the participants used by the researcher; “Apparatus” – describe the equipment used; and “Procedure” – describe the conditions under which participants were tested; “Results” discussing what statistical hypothesis tests were performed, and what the results were; and “Discussion and Evaluation” describing the conclusions reached, and their relation to past research and to theory. Did you have any criticisms of the study as you read it? Be sure to discuss the research question, the variables (IVs, DVs) and how they were operationalized, and what the hypotheses were.
