Technologies and adaptive equipment have significantly improved the lives of people with visual disabilities because they allow them to gain access to places, materials, and information that would not otherwise be available. Other technologies help with activities of daily living such as eating, dressing, toileting, and bathing. And of course, augmentative communication devices and computer programs have leveled the playing field for many students. It is incredible how many different assistive technologies and adaptive equipment are available today. The assignment for this week is for each of you to search for items that could help individuals with the identified challenges below. I’ve assigned each of you to a particular disability. To complete this assignment, you will need to use the Internet to learn more about what might be affected by each impairment and then determine what items might be able to address these challenges. describe how the students’ disability affects his/her ability to function in the classroom – identify any low-tech devices that should be considered by the IEP team (at least 3) – describe how they could assist students in the classroom – include a description of each device – include a graphic of each device when possible
