July 1, 2020This assignment will run in parallel with the Mechanical Services assignment and the Integrated Services assignment. You are to design the electrical building services for the building, for which a set of drawings is provided. You will co-ordinate this design in accordance with the requirements for the mechanical services assignment and to assist project management issues developed in the integrated services project. The client requires the design to provide a comfortable, safe and efficient working environment for both building occupants. The design should also consider access for safe maintenance. The electrical building services required for this building are – a. Lighting b. Small power c. Sub-Main distribution d. IT systems for voice, computer, CCTV/security e. Power for mechanical services f. Fire alarms The design shall comply with BS7671, Requirements for Electrical Installations, IEE Wiring Regulations 17th Edition. This will be verified by the inclusion of all design calculations. The scheme will be developed to stage 3 RIBA plan of work Lighting You will develop a lighting scheme for each area. The scheme will include specification of types of luminaire, cabling system, circuitry and switching. The type and level of illumination will be appropriate for the application. An automatic lighting control system will be specified. (10 marks) Small Power You will locate socket – outlets for each area. The scheme will include specification of floor boxes where appropriate. The schemes will include specification of cabling systems, circuitry and switching. (10 marks) Sub-Main Distribution You will specify suitable cable systems for sub mains. Sub-main cable routes within the building shall be identified. These routes will be practical and shall comply with the aesthetic requirements of the interior decoration and finishes. (10 marks) Power for Mechanical Services Sub-mains shall be provided to provide power for mechanical services plant. You will specify suitable cable systems. Cable routes within the building shall be identified. These routes will be practical and shall comply with the aesthetic requirements of the interior decoration and finishes. (10 marks) IT Systems You shall specify cabling systems for all IT equipment (5 marks) Lightning Protection Outline the risks to the building and contents from lightning. State the objectives of the BS with regard to protection from this risk (5 marks) Fire Alarm System A fire alarm system shall be designed in accordance with BS5839 and shall comply with the means of escape strategy for this building. (5 marks) Distribution Diagram An electrical distribution diagram shall be prepared and shall identify – a. Cable systems and sizes b. Maximum demand and diversified currents c. Circuit Arrangements and isolation d. Specification of distribution boards and other switchgear e. Trunking / conduit specification and sizes f. Types and rating of protective device g. Volt drops h. Fault level at origin of installation Note: This diagram will summarise all technical design factors used in the selection and specification of cabling and circuit protection (20 marks) Drawings / Sketches to be Provided a. Floor plans identifying location/type of luminaire, circuitry and switching b. Floor plans identifying location of socket-outlets, circuitry and switching c. Floor plans identifying cable routes d.
