Formal and Informal Structure
September 2, 2021Limitations of leadership in criminal justice organizations
September 22, 2021- n
- The scenario is that you have been made pharmacist-in-charge (PIC) of an independent pharmacy (comprising 2 other pharmacists and 5 assistants), in a low socio-economic northern suburb with no competitors within 2 kms. The clientele consists of mainly unemployed individuals, those with a refugee background, single mothers, a large group who have a criminal background, and those dealing with drug dependency issues. Many don’t care about Covid and do not wear masks and some do not speak English and outline the information accountant would need to prepare a budget.
n
nSpend about 450- 500 words on each of the following topicsn
- n
- Accounting / Finance: Using specific examples outline the information your accountant would need to prepare a budget/business plan for you. Think specifically about what you need to plan for in the first 6 months of an operation.
- Teams: Explain how you would increase team cohesiveness within the pharmacy.
n
n
n
- n
- Leadership: Outline how you would develop a servant leadership style to lead the staff, comprising the 2 other pharmacists and 5 assistants, giving details.
n
n
- n
- Trust: Outline how you would go about developing a high level of trust in the way that the others in the pharmacy would perceive you.
- Motivation : Pam, one of the 5 pharmacy assistants, is in her early sixties and the oldest employee at the pharmacy. She has been divorced 3 times and is currently single. She has one son in his mid-30s who is currently in prison for drug-related offences. Pam has been at the pharmacy for 30 years and feels she knows everything and tends to look down on the pharmacists since they are younger than her and not experienced in the pharmacy environment. Sometimes she is a bit loud, and she loves talking about her extensive travel experiences when she used to be married and before Covid. You note she tends to wear highly fashionable clothes and enjoys talking to older males and tries to get to know a bit about their personal background when they visit the pharmacy. She seems bored with the routine of assisting with the dispensary of scripts and managing stock and she makes errors. For example, a delivery of ordered medications arrived at 9 am. Pam started unpacking the boxes. You noticed only about 12 pm that one box, an esky, had been left behind unopened. Pam said: “I unpacked all other boxes. This esky should be ok because it has some ice blocks”. In another example, Pam came to you and said: “I have just spoken to a client. She will see her doctor next week, but she needs another box of Panadeine Forte today. I told her that you will give her one box straight away.”
n
n
nSince the pharmacy is open 7 days a week there needs to be some flexibility regarding availability, but Pam always has reasons to not work on Saturday and Sunday mornings due to “prior engagements”. In any spare times she loves to read fashion magazines and she has mentioned that she believes she is creative. She tends to have a smoke outside during any breaks she has, but some customers have complained about her nicotine-breath to you which is noticeable over her expensive perfume scents. You wonder why she was employed by the owner in the first place, only to find out she is the owner’s sister. Use the JCM on Pam to increase her motivation to what you consider would benefit the pharmacy considering each of the 5 characteristics.nn n
- n
- Change: To compete with other pharmacies in general which have a focus on discount, the owner has asked you to organise all staff to learn Arabic, or Chinese or Hindi, since they believe Australia, and especially South Australia, will become a magnet for overseas tourists (due to our control of Covid), and once international travel restrictions have been lifted. What would you do to overcome staff resistance to this change?

- Rank the 6 topics from 1 to 6 in terms of which skill/ ability / knowledge you consider most valuable for a community pharmacist, giving reasons for each choice and why each one was ranked the position it was. Try to support your responses with the literature. EssayChambers.com will help you to outline the information accountant would need to prepare a budget.
