nComparative Essay between Pride and Prejudice and Longbourn
nIntroduction
nThe novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and Longbourn by Jo Baker have both similarities and differences. Jane Austen attempts to demonstrate the narrative from the point of view of the servant. On the other hand, Longbourn tries to describe the account of love, prejudice and pride from a different angle. Jo Baker attempts to describe the story in the Bennet family from the perspectives of Pride and Prejudice by Austen Jane (Baker, 10). The novels are similar because they demonstrate love although they differ in terms of how lovers endure several challenges and finally become victorious.
nThe novels are similar because they illustrate the matter of love among its characters. Pride and Prejudice novel illustrates love stories and the courtship between Elizabeth and Darcy. In addition, the lovers experience a wide range of challenges in their journey to their marriage (Austen, 13). First, there are tensions, which are instigated by the individual qualities of the lovers. The pride of Elizabeth unfortunately makes her to mistake Darcy based on a poor initial impression. Similarly, Darcy also bias against Elizabeth for week social standing. The two lovers express love towards each other which forces them to feel guilty or their initial pride and prejudice. The novel also describes several hurdles in their quest to realize their true love (Austen, 53). For instance, they experience deceit from the actions of Wickham, idiocy of Mr Bennet, and snobbery of Ms Bingley. In addition, Catherine tries to regulate the activities of Darcy so that he does not marry her. In this regard, concerns about social interaction or the need for good social interaction inhibit the proper development of love. Elizabeth and Darcy realize the tender and mutual love that tends to suggest that the novel tend to depict love as something autonomous of these social powers. In addition, it tries to illustrate it as something that can be captured when a person is capable of fleeing the damaging impacts of classified society (Austen, 71). The novel is also cynical about love when Lucas Charlotte is attracted to Mr Buffoon and later marries him because of his money. In this regard, the incident notes that the heart does not necessarily command marriage. Nonetheless, this case helps to differentiate true love and fake love. More importantly, it proposes that true love is the vigour that defeats even the most challenging obstacles in the love (Austen, 105).
nThe novel Longbourn differs from the previous novel due to the fact that it demonstrate love between two distinct lovers i.e. James Smith and Sarah. It demonstrate that Sarah – who is a housemaid normally desires of a better life away from servitude or some form of fascinating change until cryptic man Smith James arrives. The novel illustrates a catastrophic first encounter between the two lovers (Baker, 15). However, romance gradually blooms between the two as Smith works to safeguard his past secrets. However, the loves experiences many challenges as the dark history of Smith is revealed. Consequently, Smith is compelled to separate with Sarah. Following the disappearance of Smith, Sarah experiences major changes in her life as she decides to quit her work at Longbourn and decides to work for Elizabeth Bennet who is the wife of Mr Darcy. For a long period, she suffers from loneliness since James had separated with her. Luckily, while going on with her daily job, she met James Smith who she mistaken with a salesperson. Due to the cart accident, they are unable to remember each other. However, he starts to realize a special feeling towards her although Sarah is cautious of him (Baker, 115). Finally, after an encounter with Ptolemy, she realizes that she loves Smith James more than she loves Ptolemy. After their reunion, they stay together for a long period. However, they adopt a nomadic way of life as they keep moving from place to place since Smith is in the wanted list. Finally, after a long period of changing their homes, they return to Longbourn together with their new-born son (Baker, 130). This indicates that although she had a chance of marry Ptolemy who had good past record but loves James all along. She is forced to deal with dark past of James and her employers ceaseless demands.
nConclusion
nJames and Sarah love differs from Elizabeth and Darcy love because Sarah is able to stick with her lover even when she understands that he has a past criminal life. Sarah also had an opportunity to marry Ptolemy but she refuses. In addition, although they are separated for a long period, unlike Elizabeth and Darcy, they are able to reunite and express the feeling of love. However, the two relationships are similar because they are able to overcome hurdles prior to their success. They resist disruptions and stay focussed to the course for a long time. The two couples are demonstration of a true love that is able to defeat all form of hurdles and challenges.
