Contact theory

nContact theory suggests that intergroup biasness can be minimized if the members of diverse group are allowed to cooperate when appropriate conditions exist. The theory was proposed by Allport who noted that biasness can be controlled when the contact circumstances symbolizes four main conditions. The first condition states that people must have equal opportunities and status between different groups. Secondly, there should be common objectives and goals. Thirdly, there must be interaction between different groups and finally there should be backing of institutional customs, law and authorities.

nSimilarities

nContact theory is related to Rawls approach to social justice. At point, Rawls proposes the principle of social contract. In this regard, contact theory and principle of social contract are similar because they both suggest that groups can avoid prejudice by promoting fairness. In addition, both concur that members of groups must have equal rights in order to promote justice and avoid prejudice. Furthermore, economic and social inequalities can be eliminated when the conditions in the group offer equal and open opportunities to all members.

nMost importantly, the contact theory and social justice suggest that these conditions are inter-connected that functions mutually to promote justice and minimize prejudice. For instance, measures to promote equality between people in the contact circumstances can be strengthened by powerful organizations that enhance standards of fairness. In addition, both theories argue that authorities must provide direction in terms of how members of diverse groups should cooperate with each other. Rawlss argument and contact theory are related because they inspire groups to work together by accepting certain levels of interdependence in order to achieve their common goals.
