nDelegation function of a manager
n Delegation function is the process of assigning responsibility and authority to another individual to carry out certain duties. However, the person who delegated the work still remains accountable for the results of delegated assignment. It is an approach of increasing work output and empowering the subordinate staffs to make critical decisions. Delegation in health care is an important management function because it helps to reduce workload for health care personnel. Therefore managers can focus their attention to planning and critical issues of concern. It also improves quality of health care delivery. Moreover, delegation helps to create good manager-subordinate working relationship. Through this strategy, the health care organisation can increase performance in treatment for patients. Delegation also promote the subordinate staff to develop their skils and abilities. Delegation powers increases health care personnel morale thus they develop a feeling of importance. Job satisfaction is very crucial to bring soundness and stability in relationship between patients and physian. Besides, in health care organisation delegation is not only helpful to subordinates but it helps managers to develop their skills and talents.
nRelationship between delegation and empowerment
nEmpowerment in management when frontline employees are allowed to make critical decision once reserved for to managers. This is different from delegation – emphasis more on task assignment, because decision making is a key function any organisation. With empowerment health care personnel can handle simple patients problems and situations. Therefore, an employee is capable of involving patients problems without consulting the management. Hence, managers concentrate in more extreme services that focus on improving the health care delivery.
nEmpowerment is very beneficial in management. This is because empowered employees have greater sense of ownership of their activities. This helps to increase efficiency at work places. When employee make good decisions, they gain more confidence and they become more trustworthy. Further, allowing them to make decisions improves patient or customer services since they will not wait for the manager to make decisions. However, for empowerment to succeed, it requires confident and competent managers and employees to make good decisions.
nDescribe and analyze the potential dangers of delegation
nWhen a manager delegates too much tasks employees may think that the manager is disinterested, detached or unavailable. This influences the surbordintes negatively hence they may not deliver up to the standards. It also influences decision making abilities as they tend to make poor decisions hence negatively affecting empowerment. Therefore, it is important that when managers are delegating task, they should make their subordinates aware of the reasons why they are delegating tasks.
nIn addition when managers delegate when it is too late there are high likelihood that the tasks will fail. Some tasks requires more time and when they are hastily performed they reduce the efficiency. Besides it reduces empowerment as managers try concentrate task for them that otherwise could have been delegated.
nWhen managers decide not to delegate it increases their workload and ultimately reduces efficiency. Some managers do not delegate because they lack skills to hand off responsibilities and tasks. In addition, pride, overconfidence and perfectionism contribute to lack of delegation. In this respect
