nEmotional Intelligence
nEmotional intelligence refers to the ability to think of emotions and about emotions in order to promote reasoning. It encompasses the capabilities to precisely recognize emotions, to generate and regulate emotions aiming to facilitate thinking. It also plays a role in enhancing understanding emotional knowledge (Robbins & Judge, 2015). Emotional intelligence also helps individuals to control their emotions aiming to stimulate intellectual and emotional growth. Emotional intelligence helps people to connect emotions and utilize them in performing tasks like problem solving and thinking. The capability of a person to have control over emotions involves the capacity to manage his/her own emotions (Robbins & Judge, 2015). Similarly, it enables a person to help others in regulation of emotions.
nWeaknesses and Limitations of EI as a measurement tool
nEmotional Intelligence is used as a measurement tool, which is used to recognize and identify emotions. However, the EI has some limitations and weakness, which prevent its utilization in a beneficial manner. For instance, one limitation that hinders use of emotional intelligence is time. Research indicated that it takes a lot of time to establish the skills required to completely utilize emotional intelligence. Skills development cannot be realized within a short time (Zeidner, Matthews & Roberts, 2011). Peoples beliefs, self-esteem, fears, habits and individual history also affect the capacity to harness and learn skills. A lot of time is also needed to learn how people manage their relationship and emotions.
nMoreover, it is not easy to use emotional intelligence as a measurement tool. One of the core issues regarding methods of testing is on whether EI is formed because of individual personality and temperament. Furthermore, there are concerns on whether emotional intelligence is a learned reaction established via interpersonal experiences and skills. Therefore, it focuses on nurture versus nature aspects (Robbins & Judge, 2015). Emotional testing depending on nature issues deals with conscientiousness, emotional stability and personality of an individual to assess emotional intelligence (Zeidner, Matthews & Roberts, 2011). On the other hand, nurture aspects deals with issues that are accepted socially in teamwork and leadership skills.
nEmotional intelligence also has some weaknesses because some people might make choices that favor them at the expense of the others. In addition, emotional intelligence can also be used to manipulate other individuals (Robbins & Judge, 2015). Similarly, if an individual utilize these tools in a negative manner, they can lead to adverse effects to unsuspicious people.
nResult of Emotional Intelligence Test
nAfter performing an Emotional Intelligence test my score indicated that I have above average EQ. The score also indicated that I had a room to improve my EQ. The results indicated that I am likely to be sensitive to climate created by emotional people especially when under pressure from clients, families, friends and peers. Moreover, I am aware of the impacts of my actions or behaviors on other people (Institute for Health and Human Potential, 2014). According to the EI results, I have skills to understand the needs and emotions of others. However, the results propose that I must identify and regulate my emotions when dealing with others. It also recommends that I should not fear to communicate honestly in case of challenging feelings and needs. Based on the EQ results, honest communication on airing my grievances forms one of the most critical features of emotional intelligence (Institute for Health and Human Potential, 2014). Furthermore, the results also suggested that when I have more knowledge on when emotions are influencing actions and behaviors, I would be able to stay calm particularly when under pressure. Consequently, this will improve my emotional intelligence.
