June 9, 2020Essay: Argument Due Dates: First draft: Thursday, March 23rd Length: 5 paragraphs / 2-3 pages / 500 words Topic: Below are three topics that have been in the news lately. You are to pick one of the topics and write an essay answering the question that follows your topic of choice. You may do as much or as little research on the topic as you like, but remember to (A) evaluate your sources carefully for bias, relevancy, and worthiness to be used in a college-level paper, and (B) provide a list of your sources. These do not have to be in proper MLA format if we haven’t reviewed that by the 30th, but provide enough information so your reader can find your sources. The point is not to turn this into another research project for you, but obviously you need to be informed on the topic in order to write a good essay about it. Be sure to provide some background and context for your topic. These topics all deal to various extents with legal issues. You are not a lawyer, so rather than arguing from a legal point of view, argue from a right vs. wrong viewpoint. Topic # 1: Gun Rights Search for information on the Borough of Ramsey (NJ) and The Screaming Eagle Club’s application to open a shooting range and club in the town. Question: Should the borough grant the application or deny it? Topic # 2: National Security and Individual Privacy Search for information on the FBI’s “Preventing Violent Extremism in Schools” Question: Should the program be continued or suspended? Topic # 3: Abortion Rights Search for information on Unborn Child Protection from Dismemberment Abortion Act recently passed in Arkansas. Question: Would you have voted for this law?
