June 10, 2020I’d like you to first look at a major figure of Classical Greece and then try to make some connections to his culture. First, let’s explore the worldview of the Classical Greeks. What were the most important, defining ideals of their culture? Why do you think so? Secondly, let’s look particularly at the basics aspects of the classical ideal. What was this ideal? What was its focus? What does it not emphasize? Using your text as well as class discussion, please define the Classical Ideal in your own words. Next, as you read “The Apology,” Plato’s remembrance of Socrates’ trial, I would like you to think carefully about the character of Socrates. Write down a list of adjectives that you believe describe him. Here are some questions that might help you: What does he value? What does disregard? What mistakes has he made? Do they continue to haunt him? What hopes does he have? What strengths? What weaknesses? What about him do you like? What about him do you dislike or distrust? (These are possible points to explore. Please don’t limit yourself to them.) After you have finished this list, write a paragraph or more that summarizes your vision of Socrates. Note: Socrates is a complex, multilayered character. Try to explore his contradictions. Next, consider the outcome of Socrates’ trial. What is the verdict? Why do you think the outcome happens as it does? What factors influence the jury in both its verdict and its penalty deliberation? Why do you think that Socrates was finally condemned? Is the society living up to its ideals? Why or why not? Finally, with all of this work as a foundation, try to understand Socrates and his context and then answer this central question:Why is Socrates such an influential Greek ideal? In other words, what central Greek virtues does he embody? Answer this question in a thoughtful, well-written.
