March 8, 2023Emergency contraception
nEmergency contraception (morning after pills) is the use of contraceptives to prevent pregnancy after unprotected virginal intercourse. There are two types of emergency contraceptive pills. These include plan B and 8-pill Emergency contraceptive pills. Plan B contains only one hormone progestin. It is also more efficiency as compared to the other 8-pill contraceptives and has few side effects. 8-pill on the other hand contains two hormones, which are progestin and estrogen. 8-pill ECP prevents the woman body from ovulating hence the ovaries will not release an egg that can be fertilized. Therefore, if the woman is already pregnant, taking emergency pills will not terminate the pregnancy. The use of emergency contraception is important when no other type of contraceptive has been used or when pregnancy is not planned for. In addition, emergency contraceptive is crucial following sexual assault or rape. Moreover, EC is applicable after incorrect use of barrier methods such as condoms or after missing two or more combined oral contraceptive pills in the first week.
nPros
nPlan B contraceptives should be introduced in high school. This is because more than 3.35 million pregnancies in United States each year occur through unplanned means. More than one third of these pregnancies occur in young people in their high schools and colleges. In addition, 45 percent of these unintended pregnancies end up in abortion. Unintended live births suffers high rate of maternal and infant health problems. Besides, it interferes with students completing their education. At this age, most young students are still dependent on their parents financial support. It also reduces emotional and financial resources to take care of other children in the families. In 2006 only, the cost for births resulting from unintended pregnancies was more than US $ 11.1 billion. Therefore, introduction of plan B contraceptives will reduce more unintended pregnancies among the young people in high schools and save cost.
nThe prescriptions of emergency contraceptive pills in schools are important because it would offer another alternative form of contraception. This is because condoms and other contraceptives such as oral pills are available to the young people. Therefore, plan b contraceptives would encourage students to enjoy sex without fear of pregnancies. Most young people complain over the use of condom because it reduces the sexual pleasure. Therefore, using plan b pills ensures that sexual partners enjoy sex without risk of pregnancies. In addition, plan b contraceptives are safe, effective and cost-effective method to prevent accidental pregnancies. Plan b emergency contraceptive pills are 95 percent effective in preventing pregnancies. Therefore, it would reduce mental suffering of the student due to unintended pregnancies. In addition, plan b pills have only 2 pills which are taken immediately after virginal sex. Therefore, it reduces prescriptions that discourage many patients from using contraceptives.
nThe plan b emergency contraceptive pills are safe because they have few side effects. Side effects of emergency contraceptive pills include experience of side effects such as nausea, headaches, fatigue, breast tenderness, vomiting or dizziness. 8-pill ECP causes many of these side effects. In addition, plan b does not require additional prescriptions to reduce side effects. Plan b does not change the menstrual cycle of the patient hence does not cause hormonal imbalance. Therefore, they are no risks of irregular periods after using plan b contraceptives.
nIn schools, use of emergency contraceptives would reduce the expected number of pregnancies by more than 75 percent. In addition, the failure of other methods leads to pregnancy. For instance, more than 75 percent of all pregnancies in America are as a result from condoms that break or slip off or cervical caps that are dislodged. Therefore, the use of emergency contraceptive pills would lead to reduction of pregnancies by more than 75 percent.
n Furthermore, emergency contraceptive pills would prevent about 0.65 million abortions of pregnancies that results from user failure of other methods. More than 1.9 million women fail to use contraceptives. Use of emergency contraceptives would prevent abortions in school-going children. This is because 1.3 million pregnancies in United States are unintended. Out of these unintended pregnancies, almost half of these lead to abortion. Therefore, abortion can reduce among the school-going children in United States because plan b pill will prevent risk of unintended pregnancies. Therefore, this can reduce cases of abortion for more than 0.5 million in the country annually. In addition, in school going children there are increase in the number of abortions. Abortions also risk the life of the mother. Therefore, the use of plan b contraceptive cases will prevent more maternal mortality rate among the school going children. Hence, prescription on plan b contraceptive should be introduced in high school population.
nIn addition, lack of knowledge about emergency contraceptive is the major challenge to their utilization especially in high schools. Most sexually active young teenagers in high school are not aware where emergency contraceptives exist. Besides, reports shows that most of these young women say that they would not know where to obtain the emergency contraceptives. Therefore, providing emergency contraceptives in high schools would not only add knowledge but would provide an easy success to young people who are sexually active. Furthermore, logistics such as time and resources for obtaining emergency contraceptive after 24 hours after intercourses are further barriers for their use. Hence, high school management should provide plan b contraceptive pills in their schools. This is because the sexually active students will make it to obtain the emergency pills within 24 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse.
nEmergency contraceptive are also unknown by many people including the students. Learners have poor information on their side effects, time required and their effectiveness. First, the manufacturers of these products have not provided adequate information about plan b pills. They have not carried out enough marketing through advertisements and promotional activities. Therefore, many people including sexually active students have remained uninformed. Therefore, by providing emergency contraceptives in schools, students will gain a lot of information about emergency contraceptives. In addition, many physian do not prescribe plan b pills because of legal liability. This limits the amount of knowledge, and attitude that people have about plan b pills. Therefore, providing morning pills in high school will provide an opportunity to understand the usefulness of emergency contraception to sexually active students and teachers.
nMany people fear about perceived side effects of emergency contraceptives, which limit their use. This is because there are people who believe that use of morning pills produces serious health complications. In addition, most people believe that emergency contraceptive leads to complication of fetus and loss of fertility of the mothers. However, the plan b pills do not have serious health complications. There only leads to mild side effects such as nausea and headache. Therefore, school administrator should provide plan b prescriptions in schools to create awareness to the students that the plan b pills are safe in human body.
nProvisions of emergency contraceptives in high school would enhance the availability of plan b pills for sexually active students. These students together with neighboring communities would not need to travel for long distances in clinic. Instead, they will be utilizing the programs in their schools to gain access of the drugs. Moreover, they will feel free to use the drugs because some of young people fear nurses and physian in hospitals. Besides, students will be using the drugs because the facility provides clearly written guidelines that assist users. Students using the centers in schools would also confirm that she is able to understand the instructions. When the school adopts plan B strategy, student would have the access to morning pills within minutes after having unprotected vaginal sex.
nCons
nThe development of a strategy in school to provide plan b pills will also lead to many challenges. First, it would lead to increase in social problems in society among the youth. In addition, regular use of ECPs makes them less effective in controlling the pregnancy. Emergency contraceptive pills prevent pregnancy by temporarily disrupting the hormonal balance of the woman. They change the release of hormones from the ovaries and disrupt the movement of fertilized ovum through the fallopian tube. They disturb the development of uterine lining thus disrupting the implantation of the fetus. Most students will be less concerned about abstinence.
nIn addition, ECPs do not protect against HIV/AIDS. Therefore, when emergency contraceptives are encouraged in the young generation, they will not use protective devices such as condom. Besides, unprotected sex exposes sexual partners to sexually transmitted disease such as gonorrhea and syphilis. Prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases will increase among the sexually active population. Therefore, the plans to dispense plan b pills should not take place in high schools.
nIt does not prevent abortion because it is another type of abortion. This is because fertilization of the egg takes place within fifteen minutes after sexual intercourse. The ECPs disrupts the lining of the women uterus, which prevent implantation to take place. The drug then expels the embryo from the body. Therefore, the proposed programs in high should not take place because it will increase promiscuity.
nThe proposed ECPs program in school should not take because use of contraceptives blocks the pregnancy against the human of procreation. Sex is a means of procreation and is not a way to deny chance of life for the unborn. The use of plan b contraceptives in school makes the young people irresponsible for the sexual activities. Therefore, use of contraceptive promotes early abortion, which promotes acceptance of abortion.
nUse of emergency contraceptive pills does not stop the current abortion. Therefore, it does not reduce the prevalence of unwanted pregnancies. Furthermore, it is effective at a percentage of up to 95 percent. This means that it is not 100 percent effective in preventing pregnancies. It would also lead to more unwanted pregnancies because it depends on the woman physiological conditions and frequency of use.
nI also object the idea of implementing the ECPs programs in high schools. This is because, it would encourage contraceptive risk taking. This means that it would lead to neglect of other forms of contraceptives such as condoms, oral contraceptives and intrauterine devices. More young people in high school would not support the need for use of a condom during sexual intercourse. On the other hand, due to the use of emergency contraceptives, side effects such as nausea and headache would discourage women from using plan b pills in future after intercourse. Therefore, more young women would eventually not use it hence leading to risky sexual activities. If plan b attendant does not provide potential complication and contraindications of the plan b pills to the patient, the young people would not be in a position to weigh the risks.
nSome young female students may decide not to use morning pills because in some cases the effects of the pills may interfere with hormonal balance. Some student may fail to voluntary make informed decisions on the use of plan b contraceptives. Some may be opposed to the ideas of using contraceptives based on their informed decision. Therefore, there is no need to initiate this program in high schools in New York.
nLastly, some student may not be in a position to buy the contraceptives. This is because they may be from poor social economic background. Purchasing of plan B pills requires shortest time possible usually within 24 hrs. Therefore, student may not have the cash within 24 hours to buy the emergency contraceptive pills.
nConclusion
nPlan b pills are very useful during emergency after having unprotected sex or rape. They reduce the number of unintended pregnancies in patients because they are 95 percent effective. Patient should take plan b pills within 24 hours after unprotected virginal intercourse. Plan b pills do not have side effects such nausea, headaches, stomachaches, or disruption of menstrual cycle. In addition, they do not interfere with the existing pregnancies. Therefore, plan b contraceptives should be introduced in schools to reduce the number of pregnancies among the young generations. Accidental pregnancies causes interferes with the academic time in school. This is because it forces pregnant mothers to discontinue with their studies. It also interferes the resources available in for the teenager because of unplanned pregnancies. Plan b should be provided in high school in new york because, they crease the level of knowledge for the pupils who are at their adolcent. Most young people are not aware of the applicantions of plan b pills. many are not capable of making informed decisions after unprotected sex. Therefore, providing plan b pills in high schools would create a centre of information where students can access advise. In addition, when the center of plan b pills is promulgated in many schools it would reduces challenges of inaccessibility. More students will accesss the pills in from their schools within a short period. Therefore, more sexually active students will access the pills within 24 hours when plan b pills are 95 percent effective. In addition, it would lower the number of abortions among the youths. This is because, when a condom bursts or slips, sexual partners are given a second chance in their life. Besides, it reduces the number of abortions in the country among the young people. However, use of plan b pills in high school would promote irresponsible sexual behaviours. Many young people will be using the drugs more often hence neglecting of forms of contraception. It would further increase the prevalence of HIV/AIDS among the young people. This is because emergency pills do not protect sexual partners against sexually transmitted diseases. Furthermore, it poses health risk in the body. This is because continuous use of plan b pills affects the natural hormones in the body. It does not prevent existing pregnancies hence it does not reduce unplanned pregnacies.
