June 9, 2020Peace Under Heaven: (4-5 pages) Discuss the ways in which the novel represents colonial reality of Korea in two contradictory and conflicting ways: one version of reality lived and its logic as understood by Master Yun and another version of reality experienced by the majority of the population such as his tenants and the critique of the colonial rule and of the Korean elites, such as Master Yun, as implied by the novel’s parody of Master Yun. Put another way, explain the title of the novel, “Peace Under Heaven,” and its double meaning for Master Yun and the novel’s ironic use of the term. Please consider the following issues in relation to this larger topic: Master Yun’s life style vs. his tenants’ hardship in the countryside as well as other “rural migrants-turned-urban poor” characters in the story; Master Yun’s economic, financial relationship with his tenants and his debtors; Master Yun’s exploitation of everyone who works for him; Master Yun’s sexual exploitation of working class women; Master Yun’s family members’ enjoyment of various modern urban conveniences and amenities. As Master Yun’s economic exploitation, his immorality and other traits such as his miserliness and greed are employed by the satirical narrative to imply the plight of the majority of the colonized population, please pay attention to what is NOT said but only suggested about the true colonial reality, the opposite of “peace under heaven.” ***Cite at least 2-3 examples per paragraph.
