June 9, 2020In Theme 1 we researched varying points of view about establishing norms and models for relationships among Business, Government and Society: Individualism and collectivism and capitalism The application of different economic systems to serve the needs of society (and Business) The nature of ‘pure competition’ in an unrestricted free enterprise model (Porter’s 5 forces of competition) Differing paradigms about the strengths and weaknesses of capitalism The differing views of the ‘right’ or proper Role of Government in relation to the economy and society’s needs and wants. The purposes of this SUMMARY ASSIGNMENT are to review, to reflect and to present opinions (yours). This is the time to look back on what you have read and we have discussed in this course (so far); and, additionally, to consider the potential and real effects of the intersections of society, business (economy) and government as viewed through the circumstances of a segment of people living in the United States now. DIRECTIONS: Write and submit through BB (below) a paper that is at least 8 pages long. This paper will be the result of you doing the following: Review the information that we have worked with in this course so far. (Most is posted on Bb or reflected in your written assignments) Review the Note on Political Economy (you will find this document in theme 1 reference materials)) Read the book – The Working Poor, Invisible in America (Shipler) Select and reference situations presented in the book that illustrate (in your view) both the positive and negative effects of: 1. Collectivist / individualist goals on people / society. 2. The existing economic model in the USA / and business and workplace practices presented in the book 3. USA Governments’ roles and programs (at all levels local, state, federal) and their effects on the lives of the people highlighted in the book. Present your analysis of the situations (positive or negative as you see them). Be thorough and thoughtful. THIS PAPER WILL BE SCORED AS AN EXAMINATION (500 points) and must be submitted through Blackboard. The assignment is due on or before February 23. Late papers will be accepted until February 25 (with penalty points for lateness).
